Formula gas price รท MPG + maintenance per mile

Calculate fuel and maintenance cost per mile

Fuel cost per mile is gasoline price divided by MPG. Add your maintenance allowance per mile for the running-cost estimate. To derive a maintenance allowance, divide the servicing and wear-item budget you choose by the miles it covers.

Worked example

At $3.50 per gallon and 28 mpg, fuel costs $0.125 per mile. Add a $0.10 maintenance allowance to get $0.225 per mile, displayed as $0.23. At 12,000 miles, the unrounded estimate is $2,700.

How to use the result

This tool covers fuel plus the maintenance amount you enter. It is not total ownership cost or a tax mileage rate. Add insurance, registration, financing and depreciation separately if you need a full ownership budget.

Frequently asked questions

Is cost per mile the same as a mileage reimbursement rate?

No. This result comes from your fuel and maintenance inputs. It does not determine an employer reimbursement or tax deduction.

What maintenance cost should I enter?

Use a budget based on your own servicing, tires and expected wear items, divided by the miles covered. The default is an editable example, not a quoted average for your vehicle.

Does cost per mile include depreciation?

Not in this calculator. It adds fuel cost per mile and your maintenance allowance only.
