Compare EV charging and gasoline cost by state
The EV estimate divides annual miles by miles per kWh, then multiplies by the selected or entered electricity price. The gas estimate divides the same mileage by MPG, then multiplies by gasoline price. Both sides cover energy for the same distance.
Worked example
For 12,000 miles, an EV at 3 miles per kWh uses 4,000 kWh. At $0.15 per kWh it costs $600. A gas vehicle at 30 mpg uses 400 gallons; at $3.50 per gallon it costs $1,400. The example energy-cost difference is $800 per year.
How to use the result
The state preset is a residential planning input, not your utility tariff or a public fast-charging quote. Enter your own rate when you know it. Use an efficiency figure measured from wall energy if you want charging losses included. Purchase price, charger installation and maintenance are outside this comparison.

Is charging an EV cheaper than buying gas?
It depends on the electricity price, gasoline price and both vehicles' efficiency. Compare costs for equal mileage with the inputs that apply to your driving.
Does the state rate represent public charging?
No. The selected rate is a residential electricity average from the dated public table. Public charging prices can differ.
Does this comparison include charging losses?
Not as a separate allowance. Losses are included only if your miles-per-kWh input is measured against electricity drawn from the wall.
