Towing Fuel Cost Calculator
Estimate fuel cost for towing and unhitched miles with your measured MPG. Compare MPG scenarios and plan tank range while keeping a fuel reserve.
MPG values are editable planning assumptions, not predictions from trailer weight. Enter measured towing MPG when available. Total distances must already include the return trip.
| Towing MPG | Trip fuel cost | Range retaining reserve |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | $225.91 | 234 miles |
| 12 | $190.91 | 280.8 miles |
| 14 | $165.91 | 327.6 miles |
Formula Gallons = towing miles ÷ towing MPG + unhitched miles ÷ unhitched MPG. Fuel cost = gallons × fuel price. Towing range = tank gallons × (1 − reserve %) × towing MPG.
Range is a planning estimate, not a safe distance guarantee or a towing-capacity assessment. Weather, speed, terrain and fuel access can change a trip. Refuel earlier when conditions require it.

Budget fuel for towing a trailer or camper
Enter total towing miles, unhitched driving, measured or assumed MPG for each, and your fuel price. The tool calculates fuel gallons and trip cost, compares the same distance at unloaded MPG and shows editable low/high towing MPG scenarios. It does not derive MPG from trailer weight.
Worked example
For 600 towing miles at 12 MPG plus 100 unhitched miles at 22 MPG, fuel use is 50 + 4.55 = 54.55 US gallons. At $3.50 per gallon, the trip costs $190.91. All 700 miles at 22 MPG would cost $111.36, a $79.55 difference. With a 26-gallon usable full tank and a 10% reserve, the planning range while towing is 26 × 0.90 × 12 = 280.8 miles.
How to use the result
Include the return distance once. The fuel price must match the grade or diesel required by your vehicle. Range assumes a full usable tank and constant towing MPG; weather, terrain, speed, station availability and other conditions can shorten it. Keep a reserve and refuel earlier as needed. This is a budget, not confirmation of safe towing capacity, payload or hitch ratings.

Frequently asked questions
- How much MPG will I lose towing?
- There is no universal penalty used here. Enter measured towing MPG or compare clearly labeled scenarios. Trailer shape, speed, terrain, weather and load can all change consumption.
- Does the calculator include return miles?
- Only if you include them in total towing miles and unhitched miles. It does not automatically double the distance.
- Can I use it for diesel towing?
- Yes. Enter miles per US gallon and the price per US gallon for the required fuel. The arithmetic is the same, but the MPG and fuel price must match your vehicle.
- Is the displayed range a safe refueling distance?
- No. It is a constant-MPG planning estimate from a full usable tank while retaining your entered reserve. Check conditions and fuel access, and refuel sooner when necessary.
